How to be a good Volunteer in Thailand

The following information is for upcoming volunteers.

Here are some suggestions to help you to be a good volunteer and have a positive experience working in Thailand:

  1. You should find out information about Thailand and local regulations
  2. You should be an independent and creative thinker
  3. You should be adaptable to living in Thailand
  4. You should be helpful in assisting others and able to offer your time to help when needed
  5. You should have a positive attitude and be cheerful
  6. You should smile and have a friendly personality
  7. You should have patience when teaching and dealing with staff
  8. You should be generous and share. This volunteer experience is not about a free opportunity to eat, drink and travel. Please remember that teaching is a wonderful experience and is about giving of knowledge and caring for students and people around you.
  9. You must be responsible for yourself and the students
  10. You must be prepared for teaching lessons and learning experiences. Please see the example of a lesson plan attached to this document
  11. You should be sincere and thankful towards all staff and community. You can show thanks by helping to cook food and clean up after meals
  12. You should use good communication skills to talk with children and staff at school and in the community. Your language should encourage others and be positive E.g. No swearing
  13. You must be safe at all times. Girls should not walk alone at night. If it is necessary to go out please go with a partner. Do not travel with strangers and make safe choices about modes of transport
  14. You will participate in weekly feedback sessions and a final evaluation

ICCVTT believe that all encounters with other people are a gift, no matter good or bad. Every encounter with another person teaches us a life lesson. We should give thanks for these meetings.

融入泰国文化温馨小提示

 即将到来的志愿者们,你们对于在泰国的生活肯定充满的期待,相信你们此次的旅程也将收获满满。为了更快地融入当地生活,以下给出几点小建议,相信独立、聪颖、适应性强的你们一定能够得心应手:

 1.乐观开朗,这将是开启精彩旅途的万能钥匙之一。

 2.时常保持微笑,微笑是传递友好最好的礼物,中国人乃至亚洲人都比较含蓄,但是如果你能够每一次微笑地每一个学生、老师问好,会有很多意外的收获!

 3.耐心,身为一个老师这是必备的技能之一!一个老师的教学能力也体现在教师对于学生的耐心程度。请记住,如果你的学生什么都懂,老师就没有存在的意义了。因为他们不懂,所以给他们多一点练习、回忆、反馈的时间。

 

4.给予比索取更重要,我们来到这里,我相信,大多数人不是为了免费的吃住,而是体验教师的这一美好的经历。教师,很多时候是在给予,不仅仅是知识方面的,更多的是对于学生、身边人的关怀。很多时候,给予也会受到馈赠,而总是索取之人,则让人心生厌恶。

 5.责任感,对学生负责,切勿浪费自己、学生的时间。用心备课,让彼此学有所成。

 6.感恩,在这里大家对你好,尊重你,是因为你远道而来。当地的老师们照顾我们,他们会觉得很荣幸。但是,这不代表这些都是他们的义务。当他们为我们精心准备食物、策划出行时,别忘了把感谢挂在口边,或者付诸于行动。比如:我们学校老师中午一起吃午饭,每个老师都会带自己做的美食过来分享,所以,吃完以后,我会自愿帮忙把餐具洗了。(很多时候并不是什么大事,但是如果你做了,大家会觉得你是一个有心人。)

 7.礼尚往来,泰国老师总是会给我们送来各种美食或者水果,所以很多时候我也会买点小零食、小礼物给他们,表示对他们的感谢(个人行为并不强求)。中国毕竟也是一个礼尚往来的国家,在泰国也同样适用。

 8.沟通,多跟当地老师沟通。很多时候他们英语不好,但是我们可以免费向他们学泰语!创造沟通的机会,会更好消除误会。很多时候,泰国老师对一个志愿者不满,但是也不会轻易说出来。如果时常沟通,能够更及时地解决问题。

 9.独立、自主。当一个人或结伴周末外出旅行时,一定要学会照顾好自己,能够确保独立解决自己的住宿、饮食、交通问题之后,再向照顾你的泰国老师报告你的行程,确保学校不用帮你准备餐饮、或者当地老师不用带你出去。

 10.安全!安全最重要,女生晚上不要一个人在村里瞎溜达,实在要出去,也要结伴而行。男生最好晚上不要一个人在黑灯瞎火的地方走。不搭乘陌生人、面包车(长途的比较危险,经常发生事故)。

 我的导师曾经跟我说过,现在拿出来与大家共勉:相信一切的相遇都是上天给予的礼物,无论好的一天还是差的一天,用心去感悟体会。感恩遇见对我们好的人、严厉的人、甚至不好的人,因为与他们相处的每一个点滴,都会是我们未来为人处世的底气。
