WHAT DO THE VOLUNTEERS TALK ABOUT US?

Lin Jianhong(Angelo)I had a wonderful time with teachers and lovely students here. This is a great project for both sides. I think volunteers should try to be creative, bring something that students never experienced and merge English teaching with fun. By the way,the English Camp in my school turned out to be pretty successful but it took a long and hard period to prepare because teachers here may turn to keep the traditional way and they wouldn’t understand you when talking.

Liu ShashaIt’s a fresh experience for me to teach foreign students Which it’s good for my future life. Teachers here love the students very much and treat them like kids, helping the students to wash hair and so on. I learn a lot from them. All in all, I love my voluntary job. What’s more, I experienced the local culture deeply and have some Thai friends now.

I just thought I shouldn’t linger away my holidays and need to find something meaningful to do before I actually came here. Now, it’s not just a simple volunteer work for me. I learned a great deal from every single one of teachers and students about kindness and respect. I was touched by their simple-heated way to treat other people and their zest for life. At the same time, they taught me a lot of things about the traditional culture and different lifestyles of Thailand. It’s my first time that had had chance love with people from another country. Moreover, I feel much more brave, confident and outgoing after these days with these nice people and adorable kids. Besides,I have a totally different opinion about volunteering work.”

“It is great that former volunteers can give many helpful advices to the laters.Such as how to go to school, and announcements. Our school have a stay room for me, and teachers can bring me to anywhere if I want to go. It’s great….Teachers help me too much, espacial the pre-school teacher, Lay. Students are too energetic and inattentive, so it’s hard for us to control class. And we can use everything, such as computer, printer and so on to prepare our class.”

Also, this trip help me a lot in improving my oral English hahaha. Maybe it has more affect after I come back to my life before, and I’ll take them as my value”

“Let’s say that the Thai way of life teaches one a thing or two about living in the moment, not taking things too seriously and smiling all the time!  Going back home we will remember our month here and be able to take our serious lives in Western Europe with a grain of salt. Our contacts with the teachers and students was so heart-warming that we will never forget them. Actually, we really plan to come back one day. We were invited in a teacher’s home, went to restaurant during the weekend, did karaoke and so on. It was amazing!”

“I felt everything was good organized. From very beginning, when I applied, when Mr. Jason contacted me and had an interview through Skype. Mr. Jason didn’t keep me wait for too long time. Besides, all of our volunteers must receive some warming files such as necessary Thai language, information about personal school, introduction about Thai weather and culture and so forth. What’s more, when I arrived here, Mr. Jason would ask how i felt about here, if I was satisfied with everything here. I have to say Mr. Jason concerns about our safety and inside feelings.”

“This experience was truly an enlightening experience. It has changed my perspectives on education. Having my accommodations on the school grounds allowed me to truly see the school for what is. The school was the hub of the community, where teachers, students and families would spend time before and after school socializing, playing and keeping the school grounds clean. I loved ending my day of teaching socializing over Som tum salad with the other teachers and playing Takraw with the children. Teaching in Thailand at Tahli school allowed me to experience what it really means to be a teacher; to be involved in the child + families lives in a supportive, fun and nurturing manor. This teaching experience was very different then the teaching experience I have had in Canada. The comfortable, playful environment the teachers at Tahli school provided for their students creates a fun learning environment where children can enjoy their learning. This experience has had and will continue to inspire me to create a similar learning environment.”

Actually this program is more than expected. But when I finished my work there and looked back, this program brought so much meaningful things which I cherish a lot.”

This experience has changed the way I view education and my own practices in education. The home-school-community relationship in Thailand was dramatically different than it is here in Canada. The teachers have a strong and open relationship with their students. They are friendly with one another, joke with one another, and know about each other’s families and home life. This makes for a positive relationship, open, and honest relationship in the classroom where students feel welcomed and supported. In Canada, teacher’s home and school lives are very separate. In Thailand, being a teacher means you spend time with students and other school staff before and after school. Schools in Canada are currently trying to become “community hubs” where families, students, community members and school staff feel welcomed and the school itself is a place of support for the community, Tahli school is a community hub where staff and students can be seen playing, working, and conversing together.”

The teachers and students that I worked with are my family, and they will never be forgotten. I loved every second that I spent in Thailand, and I feel that participating with this program was one of the best decisions that I ever made. There are not enough words to express the gratitude that I feel towards the teachers here. I have never felt so welcomed and so loved, and I wish that there was a way for me to show just how grateful I am. The family that I made while I was here will forever remain in my heart. It feels like I am leaving a piece of my soul behind in Thailand, and I am deeply saddened that my experience here has ended. “I am so thankful that ICCVTT offered us this precious chance to teach in Thailand for three weeks. In these three weeks. Actually, I think I was more like student than a teacher because I did learn so much from the student and teachers. Comparing  to my former volunteer experience , the most difficult thing is the communication. Students and teachers there are  not so good as speaking English so that  needed more patience to teach them and understood them. At the same time, we learned some Thai form students. This volunteer experience showed me that sincerity and love is the shorter distant between two people though they have language problem. I was tally affected by the students and the teacher and this will be my unforgettable memory forever.”

The first thing I learn is that don’t easily judge something before you really get to know it.After staying in Thailand and knew many local people, I realized some thoughts I had before about this country is not correct. I wanted to come to Thailand last year, however, due to the political status was unstable in Thailand last winter, my parents thought it was too dangerous to come. All of the information I received from TV news and Internet were about the violence and unrest, which made me feel Thailand is not a safe place. Now I know it is untrue. Except the politics, I learn about people’s life and their attitudes towards life. People are friendly and warm-heated, most places in Thailand are safe and peace. Only when you experience, or interact with the local can you know what you learn about something was a small side of the all. 2. This is the first time I served as a volunteer over two weeks. I have attended other volunteer activities before, but most of them were around two weeks. This experience helped me deepen my feelings about the meaning of a volunteer. I start to consider what impact volunteer can bring to not only one school, but also families and its community. I wish I could stay longer to continue to teach the lovely students”

“I truly enjoyed my experience with the organization. The organization itself was very well organized and helpful. Anything I needed was addressed in a timely manner and they went above and beyond to help me feel comfortable. The program itself was more than I expected. Teachers here were so helpful and welcoming, and really immersed me in the Thai culture and helped me with my every need.  The program was organized very well overall. I never felt like anything was disorganized on the organization’s end. However, I do believe that it would have been helpful to have been able to talk to the teachers beforehand. When I first started, they quickly threw me into the mix, but trying to teach the children English when I was unsure of what they knew or what they were learning proved to be difficult and waste of time for both me and the students. It would have been useful to be able to know what they were learning beforehand and organized lesson plans before I arrived. That said, the teachers were helpful and helped me organize and teach in the following weeks, and I understand that it is difficult the receive that sort of information with so many other volunteers being sent to different schools.”

Every student, from the kindergarten to the 9th grade, has taken a sincere interest to learn and use the English language. Every one made me feel very welcome. The entire community of surrounding villages was very kind and friendly to me as a visitor and made me feel at home away from home. I especially appreciated meeting the families of the students at the village markets and shops and their encouragement for the kids to learn a new language. Wat Putthisan School staff expressed an interest in learning or improving their English language skills and how to better teach English to the students.  “Volunteering at the school  and giving my time seem like such a  small gesture in comparison to the beautiful memories, I have made, warm hearted people  I  have met and the understanding of Thai culture I  have gained.Teaching the children and the rewarding feeling you get from them learning is enough for me to highly recommend this program, but you also will learn so much. I have been travelling Thailand for 2 months before volunteering at the school, however I feel I have learnt more about Thai culture ad their believes in this past 3 weeks. Thank you to the school, all teachers and students for making this once in a lifetime experience.”

My first day was a very humbling experience, with Jason and other teachers providing me with everything I could possibly want, including bottled water, food and extra items they thought I would need – Introducing me to the students and giving me a schedule for my classes.  Even the school cook happily went out of her way to accommodate my dietary requirements.  I really knew immediately that everyone was extremely grateful for my being here.  Meeting the children was also a lovely experience.  They are friendly, polite and respectful and never miss an opportunity to meet and greet with a resounding   “hello, teacher” or “good morning/afternoon teacher”.   In class they are attentive and want to learn, which does make the job easier despite the language barrier.  Of course they get a bit chatty from time to time but they are just kids.”

Volunteering is one of the greatest experiences one could have in the lifetime. You gain as much as you give. In my case, it is even more. Going through different schools and seeing the whole different world, the affections and appreciations the local people and children poured on me every single day make me doubt whether I truly deserve so much of love. Jason, the founder of the project, is doing an amazing job! Keep going! “

“I met volunteers and Jason, my wonderful volunteering started.I volunteered in several different schools, including kindergarten, primary school and high school. It’s great to have met so many students. They share many things in common, willing to learn, opening to talk and paying enough attention in classes, which are important for a student. Jason’s project offers an opportunity to the local students to practice more when talking with foreigners.”

“Before my volunteering here,I can’t believe that I would have such an unforgettable experience this summer. As the first foregin volunteer in Anubanwatsakaeo School,I’m so lucky to have the friendly consideration from everyone, especially my host family. In the class,Thai students are very polite, clever and encouraged to be active, which makes a deep impression on me.Every class is unique to me and I enjoy every moment communicating with my students.Besides, volunteering is a good opportunity to learn more about Thai culture from Thai teachers here.Actually, what I gained is more than what I gave during these three weeks. It will be my great honor if I have ever encouraged them to try something different before. Thanks to all the people in Anubanwatsakaeo School and volunteer friends of ICCVTT,I have a wonderful time in Thailand. It’s really a great project and I hope I will be back in the near future.”

We really enjoyed our stay at Anubanwatsakaeo. We felt very welcome at the school and called a very nice accommodation our home for three weeks. We just loved to be around wit the caring thai and philippine Teachers. We got the chance to experience the real thai life and everybody tried to make our time very special and wonderful. It was a great experience to teach the thai kids in English and to see, how much they appreciated it, even if it was sometimes challenging. We joined a lot of activities and meals in our free time with the Teachers . We visited nice places in the wonderful natural Sakaeo Province and even further places.  We liked the town sakaeo and  had many restaurants and possibilities to shop prettty close by the school. We loved to visit the nightmarket on Wednesdays and Fridays. They are offering awesome and cheap Thaifood . We wanna say “Kop kun ka” and “Kop kun kap” to the school, the teachers and the kids.  Thanks to everyone who made us this unique experience in our lifes!

Time flies too fast, it seems like I just came here yesterday, I still clearly remember the first day I got here, the first class I taught…teachers here are so generous and kind to us, students here are so adorable and thirst to knowledge, they brought me so much fun and happiness, like every smile on their face is a gift to me , every words they remembered in class is the best reward of my work…I didn’t expect to gain so much experience when I decided to go, and the days I had here will be the most precious memory to me, and I will definitely miss both the teachers and students here in Chongkumwitaya school after I come back home. It is a really meaningful project and I hope through many volunteers’ work students interest in English would be ignited!”

It is one of the best experiences for me to be a volunteer teacher in Chongkumwittaya School in Thailand, which I will treasure for my whole life. Through this experience I learn how to be a teacher, including how to control the class and how to communicate with the students. And in fact, to be an English teacher here also helps me improve my own English skills. Plus, this is also a chance for me to learn of the Thai culture because we attend many Thai-style activities. Moreover, during this process I get to know many nice people and they are like my best friends and even relatives. I love them so much. And now I’ve begun to miss them since I recognize that I have to leave soon”

“The volunteering experience at Watputthisan School became my most cherished memory because of Jason, the English teacher and the coordinator, P’ Jum, P’ Hom, P’ Pon, P’ Nit and other devoted teachers, my students who are thirsty for knowledge, and of course my best friend Qian who volunteered with me. I really hope to come back again to see my adorable students and the friendly Watputthisan community”

“The thing that impressed me the most is the warm welcome and the friendly treatment I received straight away, since the moment I became part of Watputhisan School. I also have been struck by the kid’s smiles; their passion and enthusiasm helped me a lot and made me feel welcome and not away from home at all. Definitely an awesome experience, really motivating, eyes opening and so much fun, despite of the big amount of patience and self control required. I recommend it to everybody, especially to who wishes to put himself at the test, discovering something new and live in a such a different environment, culture and customs; if you feel willing to help less fortunate people in the other side of the world without the involvement of money or forced donations, this is the place for you!”
